Settled by Ephraim Wilcox, Charles Sweet, William Welling, John Clifford, and Joseph Wilson in 1818, the township was organized in 1821. Its original name was Charlemont, which was unacceptable to many settlers, so it was changed to Wellington. The village was incorporated in 1855. Wellington, Ohio is in Lorain County, west of Penfield and north of Huntington.
