Named for General Anthony Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero, Waynesville is a village in Wayne Township, Ohio. The community was founded on the west banks of the Little Miami River in 1797 by Samuel Heighway, who platted the town in the fashion of an English village, laying it out in twelve squares of four acres each. The area was part of the Northwest Territory until Ohio became a state in 1803.
