Situated along the Maumee River in Lucas County, Ohio, the village of Waterville was established along the Miami and Erie Canal route in 1849, becoming a city in 2011. One of the community’s first settlers was John Pray, who came from Rhode Island in 1818, after serving in the War of 1812. He built a dam across the river to Granger Island, constructing a grist mill there in 1821. The location was known as Pray’s Falls. In 1831, he laid out the village, which was incorporated in 1882.
