Wapakoneta is the seat of Auglaize County, Ohio, and the birthplace of Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. Initially settled by Native Americans, they were displaced in 1831. Before then, a large Quaker mission was established there in 1809, and Fort Amanda was constructed eight miles from the current site of Wapakoneta in 1812. The town was platted in 1833, and chartered in 1849. The city is located on the Auglaize River, and includes parts of Duchouquet, Pusheta and Moulton townships.
