Situated on the Mad River, Buck Creek and Beaver Creek, the City of Springfield, Ohio is the seat of Clark County. Springfield was founded in 1801 by James Demint, who came there from Kentucky. When Clark County was created in 1818, Springfield beat out New Boston as the county seat. The early growth of the community was largely due to the National Road, which ended in Springfield for a decade, before it was continued on to Richmond, Indiana.
