Shelby, Ohio is located in Richland County, northwest of Mansfield. Among the first settlers in the area were Stephen Marvin and his wife, Sarah Brown, who came there from Connecticut in 1818, settling just east of present-day Shelby. Its post office was established in 1826, and the town was laid out in 1834, and named for General Isaac Shelby, a hero of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Shelby was incorporated as a village in 1853, and as a city in 1921.
