Laid out in 1818 by John Haney, Savannah, Ohio was first known as Vermillion, as well as Haneytown. Joseph Fast, a carpenter, was the first settler in the community. The name of the town and post office was changed to Savannah in 1836 or 1837. The incorporated village of Savannah is in Ashland County.
