The incorporated village of Rockford, Ohio was known as Shanesville, then Shane’s Crossing, before being renamed Rockford by the post office. An early settler in the area was Anthony Madore, a French-Indian who established a trading post there. Although the records do not indicate the year in which he arrived, he died around 1815. Anthony Shane, also a French-Indian, filed his plot to the town of Shanesville in 1820.
