Named for Frederick B. Rittman, the treasurer of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which ran its line through the town in 1871, Rittman, Ohio is the only place in the United States by that name. Settled in 1815, the town had previously been known as Arkona. Earlier names for the community included Ellio, Milton Station and New Prospect.
