Ripley, Ohio is a village on the Ohio River in Brown County. Founded by Colonel James Poage, a Revolutionary War veteran who had been granted land in the area because of his service during the war. The settlement was first known as Staunton, when it was laid out in 1812, but was renamed in 1816 to honor General Eleazar Wheelock Ripley, a veteran of the War of 1812. Due to its location near the river and the slave state of Kentucky, Ripley was an early stop on the Underground Railroad.
