Port Clinton is the seat of Ottawa County, Ohio. The town was named for DeWitt Clinton, who proposed the building of a canal from the mouth of the Portage River to the Ohio River at Cincinnati. Although this project was never completed, it did result in the formation of Port Clinton, located at the mouth of the Portage River.
