The Van Wert County village was organized in 1876 as Van Wert Junction. In 1882, a vote was passed to change the town’s name to Enterprise, but the post office refused that name due to a conflict with another Ohio town by that name, so Ohio City was chosen. Despite its name, Ohio City is incorporated as a village. John William Lambert, of Ohio City, manufactured America’s first gasoline-powered automobile in 1891, and the village was the scene of the country’s first automobile accident.
