Situated at the center of the Firelands, a subregion of the Connecticut Western Reserve, the city of Norwalk, Ohio is the seat of Huron County. Norwalk was named for Norwalk, Connecticut, which was burned by British Tories during the Revolutionary War. The first permanent house in the area was built in 1817 by Platt Benedict, who purchased 1,300 acres of land for the purpose of establishing a town. In 1818, the new town was named the county seat.
