Newark is located at the junction of the forks of the Licking River in Licking County, for which it is the seat. Following exploration by traders and trappers in earlier centuries, the first European-American settlers arrived in the area in 1802, led by General William C. Schenck, who named the village after his hometown in New Jersey.
