Montpelier, Ohio is a village in Williams County. The community was surveyed in 1845, but a water-powered mill was already in operation at a bend in the St. Joseph River, just north of the site of the public square. The town site was chosen, in part, because of its location near the geographical center of Williams County, as its founders had designs to make a bid for naming Montpelier the county seat. Several attempts, however, were unsuccessful.
