First settled in 1797, Mentor is a city in Lake County, Ohio. Its first recorded settler was Charles Parker, a surveyor with the Connecticut Land Company, who moved on the settle Milan in 1811, but his younger brother, Clark, spent the rest of his life in Mentor. In 1876, James A. Garfield bought a home in Mentor, from which he conducted his first successful front porch campaign for the presidency, becoming the 20th president of the United States.
