Situated along the Tuscarawas River, in Stark County, in the northeastern part of Ohio, Massillon was founded in 1812 by Thomas Rotch, a Quaker. James Duncan, who is known as the city’s founder, first settled in Kendal, a nearby community that was later incorporated by Massillon. The community was incorporated as a village in 1853, at which time it absorbed Kendal, to the east, and Brookfield, to the west. Massillon was incorporated as a city in 1868.
