Located in northeastern Ohio, on the banks of Lake Erie, at the mouth of the Black River, Lorain is in Lorain County, Ohio. The community was originally known as Mouth of Black River, as it began to take form about 1820. In 1836, the town was renamed Charleston, and shortly afterward its name was changed to Black River. In 1874, the village was incorporated as Lorain, for the county in which it was located.
