The community was settled by immigrants from Pennsylvania in the early 19th century, and was the northernmost western town involved in military actions during the American Civil War when the Confederate Cavalry officer, John Hunt Morgan, surrendered to Union forces there at the end of his raid into Indiana and Ohio.
