Situated near the Hocking River, the City of Lancaster, Ohio is the seat of Fairfield County. Its early settlers came as a result of Zane's Trace, which was a trail that Ebenezer Zane was commissioned to blaze through Ohio from Wheeling, West Virginia. The community was formed in 1800, a few years before Ohio became a state. Originally known as New Lancaster, its name was shortened by city ordinance in 1805, and Lancaster was incorporated as a city in 1831.
