Famous for being the early headquarters of the Latter Day Saint Church, Kirtland, Ohio was once part of the Western Reserve, and was surveyed by Moses Cleaveland in 1796. The city was named for Turhand Kirtland, a principal in the Connecticut Land Company and veteran of the American Revolutionary War. From 1831 to 1838, Kirtland was the headquarters for the Latter Day Saint movement, and the site of its first temple.
