Named for Charles F. Kettering, an inventor who lived in the community from 1914 until his death in 1958, Kettering, Ohio is in both Greene and Montgomery counties. The earliest settler in what is now Kettering was John Patterson, a farmer who built a log cabin there in 1798. The area later became Van Buren Township until Kettering was incorporated as a village in 1952, becoming a city in 1955.
