The seat of Ashtabula County, the village of Jefferson was founded by Gideon Granger, who was the U.S. Postmaster General during Thomas Jefferson’s administration, in 1803, although its first permanent residents did not arrive until 1805. Misled by land agents, the Samuel Wilson family arrived expecting to find a thriving city, but instead found only wilderness. Jefferson became the seat of Ashtabula County in 1811.
