Located in the southwestern part of Ohio, the City of Hamilton is in Butler County. Situated along the Great Miami River, at a place where the banks rose gradually, the community was founded as a military fort in 1791, and named for Alexander Hamilton. By 1800, the fort had been abandoned, but an agricultural and regional trading town had grown up around it, which was incorporated in 1810. Although Hamilton lost its status in 1815, it was reincorporated in 1827, becoming a city in 1857.
