Granville Township was surveyed in 1797 as part of the U.S. Military District, lands that were set aside for those who had served in the Revolutionary War. The area was settled first by Welsh immigrants, who moved into the northeastern part of the township in 1801. Next came settlers from Granville, Massachusetts and Granby, Connecticut, who were mostly responsible for establishing the Village of Granville, Ohio. The township and village are in Licking County.
