Situated along the Tuscarawas River in Tuscarawas County, the village of Gnadenhutten is Ohio's oldest existing settlement. The community was founded as a settlement of German Americans and Lenape Native Americans affiliated with the Moravian Church. Although the community remained neutral during the American Revolutionary War, ninety-six Lenape were killed by American militia in 1782, in what became known as the Gnadenhutten Massacre.
