Elyria, the county seat of Lorain County, is located in far northern Ohio at the forks of the Black River. Named for its founder, Herman Ely, it began with Ely's building of a log house, dam, gristmill, and sawmill in 1817. Before he died in 1852, the town had blossomed, boasting five churches, three flour mills, a newspaper, and three grocery stores.
