Dover, Ohio is in Tuscarawas County. Ohio had been a state for only three years when Christian Deardorff and Jesse Slingluff bought the 2,175 acres of frontier land that was to become Dover. The town was platted in 1807 but, by 1818, only about five buildings were there. In the mid-1820s, the Ohio Erie Canal came through, with Dover as the only tolling station in the county. While its post office was initially designated Canal Dover, the community has always been known as Dover.
