Located along the eastern shore of the Mosquito Creek Reservoir in Trumbull County, the city of Cortland, Ohio was originally known as Baconsburg, after Samuel Bacon, who built a sawmill and several buildings there in 1816. Its first settlers arrived in 1805, and the community was incorporated as a village in 1874, when the railroad established a depot there,j and became a city in 1981, after its population reached 5,011, eleven more than were required for incorporation as a city.
