Settlers first came to the area in the early 1800s, although the area in which Cleveland Heights is located was among the last to be settled. In 1828, the Mayfield Road opened, leading to some settlement, but the community was not incorporated as a village until 1903, becoming a city in 1921. Cleveland Heights is in Cuyahoga County, near Cleveland.
