Clayton, Ohio is in both Montgomery and Miami counties. The community was platted in 1816, and originally named Salem. The growth of the village slowed when it was bypassed by the railroad and the National Road. However, when residents of the surrounding Randolph Township voted to merge with Clayton in 1998, Clayton acquired the unincorporated areas of the township and became a city.
