Chardon, Ohio is the seat of Geauga County. In 1808, the Ohio General Assembly chose the, then unpopulated, area for the county seat. Land for the town plat was purchased from absentee owner, Peter Chardon Brooks, for whom the town was named. The community was founded in 1812, when Captain Edward Paine, Jr. moved into a log cabin that would be his temporary home, and the first courthouse on Chardon Square.
