Canfield, Ohio began as Township No. 1 in Range No. 3 in 1798, at which time it was on the southeastern border of the Connecticut Western Reserve Territory. The township was originally known as Campfield, which was changed to Canfield in 1800, in honor of Judson Canfield, who owned most of the land. The community serves as the seat of Mahoning County from 1846 to 1875, at which time it was moved to Youngstown.
