Canal Winchester, Ohio is in both Fairfield and Franklin counties. The first permanent settler in the area was Henry Dove, who was granted a 160-acre quarter section of land in 1811 that would become Canal Winchester. In 1821, he divided his land between his sons, Reuben and Jacob. When the canal was brought through Reuben’s wheat field, he laid out a town, which was platted in 1828, and named for his father’s hometown of Winchester, Virginia.
