Butler, Ohio is a village in Richland County. In its early days the community was known as Spohntown and Squeelgut, but it was named Independence by Thomas B. Andrews, its first postmaster, who was instrumental in the establishment of the town. Its name was changed to Butler shortly before it was incorporated in 1877.
