Despite a population of fewer than ten thousand, the city limits of Bellevue, Ohio spans Erie, Huron, Sandusky and Seneca counties. The city was first settled by Mark Hopkins and his family, who came from New York in the early 1800s. The new community became known as Amsden’s Corners, for Thomas G. Amsden, who opened a store there in 1819, trading largely with the Indians. In 1835, the town was renamed Bellevue, for James H. Bell, chief engineer of the railroad.
