Baltimore, Ohio was settled during the first decade of the 1800s, when Swiss families arrived in what would be come the west end of town, creating a community they named Basil in 1825. In the same year, settlers from Virginia settled east of there, naming their community New Market. In 1828, a settlement north of the railroad became known as Rome City. New Market incorporated in 1833, changing its name to Baltimore. In the mid-1940s, the three communities merged, taking the name of Baltimore.
