Athens is the seat of Athens County, Ohio, and its largest city. It is situated along the Hocking River in southeastern Ohio. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1797. The town was surveyed and plotted in 1800, and incorporated as a village in 1811. Athens is home to Ohio University.
