Amherst, Ohio is in Lorain County. The community was founded by Jacob Shupe, who settled on a hill near Beaver Creek in 1811, operating a sawmill, distillery and gristmill. Among the community’s early industries were sandstone quarries, which brought the railroad to Amherst and stimulated the shipping industry on Lake Erie. Its first settlers were mostly German and Swiss.
