The state of Ohio is part of the Great Lakes region of the United States which was almost admitted into the union in 1803. President Jefferson signed the act of Congress approving its boundaries but Congress didn't pass the resolution declaring it a state until 1812. In 1953, President Eisenhower declared it the 17th state in the union, retroactively. It is nicknamed the Buckeye State, and its capital is Columbus.
