Often billed as the geographic center of North America, Rugby is the seat of Pierce County, North Dakota. The community was founded in 1886 as a junction along the Great Northern Railway, at the place where a branch line to Bottineau met the main line. Its early settlers arrived in 1812 from the Earl of Selkirk’s colony in Manitoba, Canada. Initially known as Rugby Junction, its name was shortened when it became a city.
