Founded in 1887, New England, North Dakota predates all other settlements in Hettinger County by several years. The community was so named because many of its early settlers had come from Vermont, Massachusetts and other New England states. Until the tracks were abandoned in 1983, New England was located at the terminus of the Milwaukee Road branch line that split from the railroad’s Pacific Extension in McLaughlin, South Dakota. New England is immediately north of Havelock.
