Minot is the county seat of Ward County, and the fourth largest city in North Dakota. Founded in 1886 during the construction of the Great Northern Railway, Minot became known as “Magic City”, commemorating its rapid growth over so short of a time. Minot was founded when the Great Northern Railway ended its progress through the state for the winter of 1886, after running into trouble building a trestle across Glassman Coulee, making it the end of the line. Minot was named for Henry D. Minot.
