Killdeer, in Dunn County, North Dakota, was founded in 1914 at the end of a branch line of the Northern Pacific Railway that began in Mandan. The community was named for the nearby Killdeer Mountains. Fought in 1863, the Battle of the Killdeer Mountains may have involved more soldiers and warriors than any other single encounter between the United States and Indian nations west of the Mississippi.
