Jamestown is the seat of Stutsman County, and situated at the confluence of the James River and Pipestem Creek, in North Dakota. As with many other towns, Jamestown was settled along the railroad, at the place where the railway was to cross the James River, adding another section to the new northern transcontinental line in 1871. In 1872, the Army established Fort Seward on a bluff overlooking the crossing. Founded in 1872, Jamestown was incorporated in 1883, and named the county seat in 1873.
