Grand Forks is the third largest city in North Dakota, after Fargo and Bismarck, and it is the seat of Grand Forks County. The community grew quickly after the railroad came through in 1880, and was incorporated in 1881. Alexander Griggs, a steamboat captain, is regarded as the “Father of Grand Forks”. His steamboat froze in the Red River in late 1870, forcing him and his crew to winter in the area. Griggs platted the settlement a few years later.
