Founded in 1878, Drayton, North Dakota is in Pembina County. The community was settled by a group of Canadians who met in Drayton, Ontario, Canada, for the purpose of planning their migration to Manitoba. En route, they were joined by Alexander McCrea, then traveled by wagon through a section of North Dakota, and were impressed with the area, deciding to stay, naming the settlement for the Ontario town. The town was formally organized in 1880, becoming a village in 1889, and a city in 1896.
