Dickinson is the seat of Stark County, North Dakota. The community was founded in 1881 along the transcontinental rail line built through the area by the Northern Pacific Railway, although the settlement was first known as Pleasant Valley Siding. In 1881, it was renamed Dickinson for Wells S. Dickinson, a land agent and New York state senator who had visited in 1880, platting the townsite. Dickinson became a city in 1883.
