The City of Bottineau, North Dakota is the seat of Bottineau County. The community was founded in 1883 as Oak Creek, serving as a customs station and overnight stagecoach stop. In 1884, its name was changed to Bottineau, for Pierre Bottineau, a pioneer, hunter, trapper and land speculator. Originally, the town was situated a mile and a half from its current location, as it moved south in 1887 after the railroad came through. Bottineau is located near the state’s border with Manitoba, Canada.
