In 1792, Joshua Potts requested that the North Carolina General Assembly commission the town that was to become Southport, although its original name was Smithville, which became the seat of Brunswick County in 1808, then moved to Bolivia in 1975. After the American Civil War, a port was established, prompting the town's name to be changed to Southport.
